Serve as a senior wildland firefighter Instruct personnel in the use of wildland fire equipment, methods, and safety practices Determine if a burn or proposed burn is in prescription Position personnel, and position and deploy equipment, in wildland or prescribed fires This key fire management position is categorized under the Interagency Fire Program Management (IFPM) Standard as a Forestry Technician Firefighter, Moderate complexity. The position is covered under the secondary/administrative category for special firefighter retirement provisions. You may meet qualification requirements but not be eligible for special retirement coverage. If you are not eligible for special retirement coverage, you will be placed in the regular retirement system. Conditions:
Work often requires physical exertion overseeing fire suppression activities including walking over rough, steep, uneven terrain in all weather. Field work performed in steep terrain uneven surfaces, rocky, or covered in thick vegetation. Temperatures are frequently extreme, both from weather and fire conditions where the presence of smoke and/or dust conditions are frequently severe. The employee is faced with emergency situations at all hours, long shifts or multi-day assignments. Only experience and education obtained by June 13, 2019 will be considered. Minimum
Qualifications:
Possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to a GS-04 in the Federal Service. Examples of specialized experience may include:
participate in fire prevention, suppression, and prescribed burning; prepare fire reports; instruct and provide on-the-job training; dispatch personnel, supplies and equipment; operate wildland fire equipment; maintain records of fire time and attendance work done by fire crews, OR Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major degree as described in OPM's Individual Occupational Requirements for either the 455 or 462 series, OR Possess an equivalent combination of specialized experience and education described above. FFT1S-290 Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
